"It is an undemocratic act. I strongly condemn it," Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu said in a statement.
It was shameful that the UPA government was using repressive measures against students protesting peacefully at India Gate seeking justice for the victim, he added.
"Women and girls lacked safety under the UPA rule," the former Chief Minister lamented and demanded stern deterring action against the guilty in the rape case.
CPI state secretary K Narayana also decried the police action against the protestors in which some 15 persons were injured.
"The government should immediately bring the culprits (in the rape case) to book," he demanded.
Several rounds of teargas shells and water cannons were used as young students demanding justice for the 23-year-old gangrape victim clashed with police in Delhi.

Meanwhile, various women's organisations and non-governmental organisations staged a protest at Indira Park here demanding that the Central government should take strong measures to prevent atrocities on women.
The organisations expressed anguish over the growing number of attacks on women and girls in the national capital.
Such incidents were recurring only because the government failed to take deterrent action against the guilty, they added.
Students took out a separate rally on the Necklace Road here protesting the New Delhi rape incident. Sporting black robes, the students raised slogans against the government.
