Announcing a slew of initiatives, including the launch of 'landscaping of PWD roads' to reduce dust and installation of LED street lights, the Delhi government today allocated over Rs 846 crore to the PWD for 2018-19 fiscal.

The allocation translates into an increase of 4.75 per cent compared to the previous budget estimate of Rs 800 crore.

"The scheme 'landscaping of PWD roads' initiates edge-to-edge paving or greening and beautification of all PWD roads," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, presenting the budget in Delhi Assembly.

"We will also replace all street lights on PWD roads with energy efficient LED lights under Energy Service Companies (ESCO) model," he said.

The department will take up a pilot project to install solar panels over 16-km-length of cycle tracks.

Expressing confidence to improve quality of air in Delhi, Sisodia said: "While some of these initiatives will be funded through budgetary support, some will be funded through the Air Ambience Fund or through funds collected under Environment Compensation Charge (ECC).

Bringing under its ambit other reasons contributing to the pollution, Sisodia said: "The answer to Delhi's pollution problem does not lie in the schemes of Delhi government alone. It will require all state governments in NCR to launch a similar concerted effort and for that the central government will have to take the lead.
