Health Minister A K Walia, chairing a meeting to discuss issues related to fire safety in hospitals, directed PWD to put in place adequate fire safety infrastructure in 17 hospitals which are yet to obtain no objection certificates from the Fire department.

Delhi government runs 37 major hospitals besides nearly 200 dispensaries. PWD is responsible for maintaining all hospital buildings including fire safety infrastructure in them.

Medical Superintendents of almost all the major hospitals attended the meeting besides senior officials of PWD.

Walia told Medical Superintendents that fire safety in hospitals is of paramount importance.

"The PWD was instructed to improve fire safety measures in all the hospitals," said an official who attended the meeting.

The Minister also asked the authorities to check all electrical fittings and put all hanging wires in proper place to avoid possible short circuit.

Walia underlined the need of a proper evacuation plan to facilitate rescue and relief operations. The hospitals have also been instructed to review the status of fire safety norms at regular intervals.
