"We are examining the issue. I have told education minister to take up the issue seriously and see what can be done," Dikshit said.

A three-member committee, set up last year by the Delhi High Court, has examined the financial records of 200 schools on a random basis out of total 1,172 schools and submitted its first interim report before the bench of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri and Justice Siddharth Mridul last week.

The panel, headed by former Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Anil Dev Singh, said in its report that 64 schools "unjustly" increased fees and recommended that all of them refund the same with nine per cent interest to the parents.

Dikshit said the schools have justified the hike on the ground that they had a difficult "financial condition" and did not have any other way but to hike the fee.

The Chief Minister said the government would also examine whether there was a need to increase the financial assistance to private schools for cost of education of the students belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS).

As per RTI act, schools have to reserve 25 per cent of the seats for EWS students. The schools cannot take fees from EWS students as government reimburse them.
