Delhi BJP today accused Congress of ignoring the welfare of Purvanchali people despite their significant contribution in development work in the national capital.
"There are over 30 lakh Purvanchali people living in Delhi. For years they are contributing to the growth and development of the national capital but they seem to be living themselves on the fringes of development.
"Nothing has been done by the Congress government in the last 15 years to bring civic solutions to the areas having settlements of people from Purvanchal," a BJP statement said.
In a bid to garner their support in the upcoming Assembly elections, Delhi BJP will hold a 'Purvanchal Sammelan' tomorrow.
Party's former national president and Delhi election in- charge Nitin Gadkari, city BJP chief Vijay Goel and Delhi election co-incharge R K Sinha would raise the issues, problems and difficulties faced by Purvanchali people in the national capital.
"The Purvanchali people are finding it difficult to get registered as voters...Get their children enrolled in good schools, obtaining a ration card, get LPG connection, telephone connection, driving license, Aadhaar card, access to banking or opening of bank accounts or post-office savings accounts...They aren't able to avail benefits of most of the government schemes," the statement said.
"Congress has never paid attention to the problems faced by the people from Purvanchal, a large section of whom is compelled to live in poor conditions. The Delhi government has only made empty promises to Purvanchali people in the 15 years of its continuous misrule," Purvanchal Morcha president Vijay Bhagat said.
BJP also criticised Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's comment that migrants are responsible for rise in crime in the national capital.
"The statement is against the dignity of the migrants," Delhi BJP spokesperson Aman Sinha said.
