Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, after a meeting on air pollution, said her government was contemplating a number of short-term and long-term measures to improve the air quality in the national capital.

"Our government is really concerned over the reported pollution level and occurrence of dense smog over Delhi. We are considering a number of steps to check pollution," Dikshit said.

Officials said the Transport Department and the Delhi Police may be instructed to take action against "grossly polluting" vehicles and an on-the-spot fine of Rs 2000 could be imposed on them.

"A proposal to this effect would be placed before the Cabinet soon," they said. Currently, a fine of Rs 1,000 is levied on vehicle not having a pollution under control (PUC) certificate.
