Officials from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and environment department of the state government will soon visit the effluent treatment plants in Gujarat to study the systems adopted there to check generation of hazardous sludge.

The committee members and officers of the DPCC along with officials from the environment department will visit the state with an aim to understand and explore the feasibility of implementing practices and systems adopted in Gujarat to check generation of hazardous sludge, Delhi government, Environment Secretary, Sanjiv Kumar said today.

Delhi government has already identified two industrial areas in the national capital which have maximum concentration of hazardous sludge generating units, Kumar said.

Eleven Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in these industrial areas shall be converted into Biological Treatment Plants by closing the hazardous sludge generating units located in these industrial areas, he said.

The DPCC will hire a consultant and prepare a roadmap for this, the environment secretary said.

He further said that in the absence of Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) in Delhi, CETP Societies are storing the hazardous sludge.
