Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken today criticised the AAP government's scheme notified for street vendors, saying it will "rob" their livelihood rather than protecting their trade.

Describing the scheme as "totally impractical", Maken said that if the AAP government does not change "anti-street vendor" clauses in the scheme within ten days, the Delhi Congress will hold a massive demonstration along with the street vendors against it.

Maken alleged that "the scheme for street vendors gives all the powers to officials, which will increase corruption and their harassment."

"The vendors will also find it extremely difficult to carry out their trade as the conditions stipulated in the scheme were totally impractical to be complied with," he said.

Maken said that he will also write a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal regarding the street vendors' issue.

As part of the scheme, the government recently issued a notification banning cooking food on roadsides.

However, faced with opposition, the government said it would amend the scheme.

Some representatives of street vendors had met the Chief Minister and demanded withdrawal of the notification in this regard.
