Delhi government will inspect the science laboratories in schools across the national capital to ensure the design of those are according to norms and all safety procedures are followed.

The Directorate of Education (DoE) has sent a communication to schools informing them about constitution of an inspection team by its science and TV branch and asked them to ensure that the safety guidelines are followed.

"It is not uncommon to observe that in many cases, the essential safety measures are either not given much attention to or are ignored altogether. Gas fittings in chemistry laboratory often do not fulfil the mandatory standards and requirement. Chemical are, in many cases, not stored in a safe manner and under safe custody," the letter said.

The recommendations made by the DoE include designing of all science laboratories according to necessary norms and standards, keeping two wide doors for unobstructed exits, adequate number of fire extinguishers near laboratories.

It also include periodical checking of vulnerable points in relation to possibility of any mishappening, display of do's and don'ts in the laboratory, safe and secure storage, proper labelling and upkeep of chemicals and availability of first aid and basic medical facilities in schools.
