Delhi government will invoke the ESMA against wholesalers of fruits and vegetables who began a protest today threatening to stop the supply against the government's move to charge six per cent commission from them.

"The government will invoke ESMA if the supply was stopped by the wholesalers. We have got requisite permission from Lt Governor," said PWD Minister Manish Sisodia here.

In a move to reduce the prices of fruits and vegetables in the national capital, the Delhi government decided to implement a High Court order to charge six per cent commission from the traders and not the farmers.

The decision is being opposed by traders of Azadpur, besides wholesalers from other markets including Okhla who are participating in the strike.

Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) was established to ensure the delivery of certain services, which if obstructed would affect the normal life of the people.

The Government has also threatened cancellation of licenses of those traders who are not willing to comply with the orders.
