In order to make children realise the importance of elders in their lives, Delhi government has asked schools in the national capital to administer an oath to students for respecting senior citizens on World Senior Citizens Day.

October 1 is celebrated as World Senior Citizens Day.

"The idea behind the move is to make children realise the importance of elders early in their life. These days you will see that a lot of people abandon their parents once they become old, compelling them to stay in old-age homes.

"So, the schools have been asked to teach the students the importance of respecting senior citizens," a senior education department official said.

A formal circular will be sent to all the schools, both private and government, tomorrow asking them to administer an oath of respect for senior citizens to the children during the morning assembly.

The oath reads, "On the senior citizen's day, I take an oath to respect my grandparents and all other senior citizens. I realise the importance of elders in my life and I know that I will not be able to achieve success without their good wishes.
