Delhi Lt Governor asks police to maintain law and order

Khanna, presiding over a high-level meeting, reviewed the situation in Subhash Park area near Jama Masjid and asked the authorites concerned to ensure compliance of the High Court order.

The Delhi High Court on Friday had ordered stopping of construction of the mosque and directed the local civic authority to immediately hand over the site to the ASI to ascertain if there were any remains of Mughal era structure there.

Today's meeting was attended by Power Minister Harun Yusuf, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) Mayor Mira Aggarwal, ASI Director General Gautam Sengupta, Delhi Wakf Board chairman Matin Ahmed, MLA Shoaib Iqbal, Shahi Imam of Fatehpur Masjid Maulana Mufti Mukkaram Ahmed and Delhi VHP Vice President Ujahar Singh.

 

Chairman of Delhi Commission for Minorities Safdar Khan, Special Commissioners of Police P N Aggarwal and Dharmendra Kumar and NDMC Commissioner P K Gupta were also present in the meeting.

Officials said the meeting decided that the municipal corporation should ensure that no gathering takes place in and around the site while asking police to provide all required support to ensure law and order in the area.

The Commissioner of Police told the meeting that due to irresponsible acts of certain elements, public property had been damaged and certain police officials suffered injuries.

The meeting was of the view that such provocative actions need to be checked so that the situation does not escalate. MORE
