A Delhi Police constable was today arrested for allegedly demanding "protection money" from a man who was earlier involved in pick-pocketing, police said.

The man approached the Vigilance branch of Delhi Police saying that earlier he used to indulge in pick pocketing and give monthly protection money to a constable Sanjeev for not arresting him.

"The complainant, however, had a change of heart and left pick-pocketing. But Sanjeev, who claimed to be posted at Chanakyapuri police station, asked him to resume his work and pay him a monthly sum of Rs 5,000 as protection money," said a senior police official of the Vigilance unit.

Based on the complaint, a trap was laid and Constable Sanjeev was arrested allegedly accepting Rs 4,000 near Ashok Nagar metro station.

The constable is currently posted at district line in North West Delhi.

A case has been registered and further investigation was on, the official said.
