Observing that corruption is spreading like a "dangerous disease" in the society, Special CBI Judge Dinesh Kumar Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Head Constable Surender Pal, posted at Shalimar Bagh police station here at the time of incident.

"The convict Surender has been found guilty of demanding and accepting bribe from the complainant. The convict has been proved to have abused his position as a public servant beyond any reasonable doubt.

"The disease of corruption is spreading like a dangerous disease in the society," the court said, while sentencing Surrender. He, however, was released on bail to appeal against his conviction and sentencing.

The case against Surender was lodged by the CBI in September 2006 under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court sentenced Surender saying one should keep it in mind that a corrupt person would eventually be caught and his whole family will have to suffer.

"A corrupt man may be indulging in the corruption for long and the transaction in question, for which he was prosecuted and convicted may be the only one of those hundred sequences.

"The message must go to the people who had seen accused prospering while he was indulging in corrupt practices, that if found guilty, one day, the entire family may be ruined," it said. (More)
