Press Trust of India New Delhi
RSS affiliate Sewa Bharti has launched a week long campaign for planting one million saplings of timber trees across the city.

The campaign launched on Independence Day will continue till August 22. Ten lakh saplings of 65 species which are native to Delhi will be planted during the week, Bharat Bhushan, secretary of Delhi unit of RSS, said.

"Also, geo mapping of plants will be done annually through a software developed by us to ensure their proper upkeep and survival," he said.

The 65 species include neem, mango, jamun, anola, arjun, shisham, amaltash, gulmohar and other shady trees that are native to the capital city, the official said.

Sewa Bharti will run the campaign in each of its 179 units with active support from municipal corporations, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), forest department of the Delhi government as well as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) which has provided the saplings for the drive.

The entire exercise will involve resident welfare associations, schools, private and government organisations, and religious outfits, Bhushan said.

"We have asked people to adopt one sapling each and become its guardian. This will ensure maintenance and survival of the saplings," he said.

The Delhi RSS unit secretary added that the planted saplings will be numbered and their photos will be sent on a Whatsapp group. Later, the data will be used for geomapping.

The environment committees of Sewa Bharti will conduct four surveys every year to keep a check on the planted trees, he added.
