As the city sizzled under a blazing sun, power demand surged to 5,642 MW around 3.30 PM, the highest ever recorded figure for this time of the season.
The discoms said the city was breaking previously-set records this year in terms of demand for power as it had crossed 5,000 MW in the first week of May itself, for the first time ever.
"Delhi's peak power demand today clocked 5,642 MW at 3.27 PM, which is the highest ever this time of the year. Last year, Delhi's peak demand in the third week of May (May 18) had touched 5,027 MW. The increase amounts to over 12 per cent," a discom official said.
The city's power demand had reached a staggering 5,925 MW on July 15, 2014, the highest-ever recorded in its history.
The city, in the grip of an intense heat wave, had crossed the 5,000 MW (5,013 MW) - its highest ever in the first week of May - earlier on May 2 at 11.30 PM.
The mercury today soared to 43.3 degrees Celsius, three notches above the season's average, even as the Met office warned of hotter days ahead.
