In order to ensure better supervision and coordination among the force, Delhi Police today extended the number of ranges from the existing four to six.

The two new ranges will be Eastern Range and New Delhi Range, an official statement said.

Earlier, there were South-Eastern, Central, Northern and South-Western ranges.

"The new scheme of things is a brainchild of Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi which is aimed at better supervision of the 80,000 strong force. Delegation of work will improve efficiency. The work earlier done by four officials will now be done by six," Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said.

Under the new mechanism, East and North-East districts will come under the Eastern Range while the New Delhi Range will comprise New Delhi district, Railways and Metro Rail, the statement said.

The step is also seen as an effort to optimise resources ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi scheduled in November this year.
