Growing resistance to anti-biotics among people and their general health conditions were discussed in Rajya Sabha today with members seeking ban on sale of anti-biotic resistant non-vegetarian food.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu (Cong) said the health of people was at stake and sought a ban on poultry and farm animals injected with anti-biotics.

The Congress member said as per a US study, 20 lakh people were found to be anti-biotic resistant there, of which 23,000 people had died.

He said in Delhi too, as per a poll, people are developing anti-biotic resistance as farm-bred animals were injected with anti-biotics.

"It is dangerous," he said, seeking a ban on such like poultry and farm products.

With many members supporting him, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, "I think the whole House agrees with this. Parliamentary Affairs Minister should inform the Health Minister...Please come out with a solution."

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prakash Javadekar, who also holds the Environment portfolio, said he will look into it as it was an environmental issue too.
