Civil bodies and students here have urged Chief Minister N Biren Singh to ensure an impartial CBI inquiry into the mysterious death of 22-year-old Manipuri youth Pravish Chanam in Greater Noida in September, a statement issued by a local organisation said today.

The members of People's Action Committee, a panel formed by locals here to seek justice for Chanam, said in its statement the case has been hanging in balance for the past two months but there seems to be no progress yet.

Chanam had gone to Greater Noida to attend a musical concert on September 8 and went missing thereafter.

A missing report was filed the day after by his brother Ravikanta at Knowledge Park police station in Gautam Budh Nagar district of UP.

Four days later, on September 13, his body was allegedly cremated by authorities at Dr. BR Ambedkar Rao Hospital in the district without notifying family members.

"It has been almost two months since the incident occurred at Greater Noida but till date we have no proper knowledge on how the 22-year-old youth died," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla today said she will write to her Uttar Pradesh counterpart Ram Naik to expedite the investigation.

The death of the youth triggered massive protest, both in his hometown Imphal and the national capital.

Biren had deputed Additional DGP Pramod Asthana to assist UP police and take a first-hand account of the investigation. He also met his UP counterpart Yogi Adityanath on September 27 to discuss the matter.

Adityanath had assured a fair investigation into Chanam's death and welcomed the proposal of handing over the case to an independent investigating agency.

Five police personnel were suspended by Noida police for dereliction of duty in connection with the case.
