Pop star Demi Lovato will voice the lone Smurfette in Sony Pictures Animations' "Get Smurfy", which is a fresh look at the little blue world and some of its mysteries.

Lovato, 27, will be joined by Rainn Wilson as the voice of Smurfs enemy Gargamel, while actor Mandy Patinkin will be the voice behind Papa Smurf in the new computer-animated film, which will be rooted in the original style of "Smurfs" creator, Belgian comics artist Peyo Culliford.

Kelly Asbury of "Shrek 2" fame will helm the latest adventure in the blue land. The casting was announced here on the occasion of the Global Smurfs Day yesterday.

In the reboot, Smurfette and her brothers embark on a journey through the Enchanted Forest to find a fabled Smurfs village before their nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel, does.

Along the way, some of the mysteries about the little blue creatures' origin come to light such as -- do Smurfs come in any other colours than blue? Are their mushroom houses organic and why there is only one girl in the 99 boys?

"The continued popularity of the Smurfs is unmistakable, and this new outing will return them to the fully-animated world that launched them," Asbury said while announcing the cast.

Jordan Kerner, best known for his titles "Charlotte's Web" and "The Smurfs", will produce it with Mary Ellen Bauder of "Hotel Transylvania" fame.

"We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story. It returns to the roots of Peyo's creation in this CG animated adventure. I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide. We couldn't be more excited with the talented new cast we're starting to assemble for our Smurfy reboot!," Kerner said about the franchise that has grossed more than USD 900 million globally.

The animated movie is set for a worldwide release on March 31, 2017.
