Senior Congress leader Mohan Prakash today alleged that the Centre's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes has led to "anarchism" in the country and gives an impression that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "is playing in the hands of foreign powers".

"The country is in a mess and it shows the decision was taken was not for good. It gives an impression that the Prime Minister is playing in the hands of foreign powers," he said at function here.

The announcement was made without considering its consequences. It is also not legitimate, the Congress general secretary claimed.

"The government has informed that the new notes were being printed for the last six months then how come the new notes bear the signature of the new Governor of the RBI who took the charge in September," Prakash said.

The government must clarify, he demanded.
