Janata Dal (Secular) today staged a protest inside the assembly, demanding that they be allowed to raise the issue of demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1000 notes and its impact on cooperative banks and farmers.

As soon as the House met, JD(S) MLAs H D Revanna and Y S V Datta pointed out to the Chair that they have given an adjournment notice on the issue.

Speaker K B Koliwad said he would consider it later and as per schedule Question Hour would be taken up first.

JD(S) through an Adjournment motion demanded a discussion on the inconvenience caused to farmers like repaying crop loans by the due date, as District Central Cooperative Banks had been barred from accepting and exchanging demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

As the Speaker took up the discussion on drought, JD(S) leaders again urged the chair to allow them make preliminary submission on the issue and also for a separate discussion.

The Speaker said the issue may be raised during the debate on drought and a preliminary submission on the issue cannot be permitted.

Agitated by this, JD(S) members trooped into the well of the House, demanding a separate discussion.

Though they did not join the protest, some Congress members also raised their voice in favour of discussion on demonetisation.

Following this, the Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes and called leaders for the meeting, where it was decided that a separate discussion would be allowed on the issue post the discussion on drought.

After the assurance from the Speaker, JD(S) withdrew its protest.
