Demonetisation surgical strike on ill-gotten money: UP Guv

Political parties who use blackmoney in elections will feel bad about the decision of the government to scrap high denomination currency, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik said today as the state gears up for assembly polls due early next year.

"I have fought several elections...We have seen that several parties use blackmoney. Those who have blackmoney will feel bad. Let us see who feels bad and who feels good (about the decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes)," he told reporters here.

Supporting the move, he said it was akin to an "economic surgical strike on ill-gotten money.
 

He said while it will cause inconvenience to people for some time, but everyone should happily go through it for the larger good of the country.

Naik was asked whether the decision of the government will check use of money power in Uttar Pradesh elections.

The UP Governor was here for the release of Hindi, English, Urdu and Gujarati versions of his book 'Move Ahead' by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Vice president Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and several governors and chief ministers were present on the occasion, he said.

Asked why Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav skipped the event, he said he would be present in Lucknow on Friday when a similar event will be held in Raj Bhawan, Lucknow. Home Minister Rajnath Singh would preside over the function there.
