Deputy sarpanch arrested for bribe

A Deputy Sarpanch was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 this evening from a villager for issuing him a certificate, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said.

Suresh Waghmare, Deputy Sarpanch of village Borli in Murud taluka of Raigad, had demanded Rs 5,000 from the villager for issuing him a certificate related to assessment of his house, Additional SP (ACB) Shrinivas Ghadge said.

Waghmare later scaled down his demand to Rs 4,000 to which the villager agreed and simultaneously lodged a complaint with the ACB.

The anti-graft agency laid a trap and caught the Deputy Sarpanch accepting the bribe near the Borli bus stand, he said.
 

Waghmare has been arrested and booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the officer added.
