Senior IAS officer U Sagayam, appointed by the Madras High Court to probe alleged illegal granite quarrying, today sought details from the Customs and Excise and Income Tax departments about the quantum of excise duty and tax collected for mining and export of granite.

He also sought details on the quantum of stones sent from Tuticorin and other ports and the amount paid as excise duty for making an assessment regarding the granites quarried and exported, officials said here.

Sagayam was appointed as special officer/legal commissioner by the High Court on September 11 last year to probe mining leases issued by government and "violations" by permit-holders in the district.

The then Madurai District Collector, Sagayam had pegged loss to state exchequer on account of irregularities in granite mining at Rs 16,000 crore.
