The epic love story featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the role of Devdas' childhood sweetheart Paro and Madhuri Dixit Nene as courtesan Chandramukhi, who lends support to the hero as he descends into alcohol after his beloved gets married to someone else.
Bhansali's "Devdas" was preceded by director Bimal Roy's 1955 adaptation of the novel, starring Dilip Kumar in the titular role, and 1936's "Devdas" with KL Saigal in the lead role.
Besides Hindi, the novel has also been adapted into films of other languages.
