The demand of chaplets has picked up in this historic and industrial city in the wake of forthcoming marriage anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, which falls on coming Sunday.
The markets are flooded with chaplets, shop owners said here today.
It has been a tradition to offer chaplets to Guru Granth Sahib installed in the Gurudwara Kandh Sahib here to seek the blessings of Guru Nanak Dev. The belief is that parents who do so any time near the anniversary, manage to get their wards married off very soon.
The Gurudwara Kandh sahib was constructed in the sacred memory of Guru Nanak Dev where his marriage was solemnized with Bibi Sulakhani, a resident of this town in 1487, SGPC officials said here.
The devotees from different parts of the country and abroad congregate here during the marriage anniversary, popularly known as 'Babe da viah', to seek blessings while tying chaplets with the palki (palanquin) in the Gurudwara.
The devotees also offer chaplets to the palki (palanquin) of Guru Granth Sahib during the Nagar Kirtan being took out in the city on the occasion of marriage anniversary which is celebrated every year.
Surjit Singh, a resident of Bhangali village told that his family had come to Gurdwara Sahib a few years ago to wish for marriage of his daughter which was fulfilled and all family members have come to tie chaplet here.
Gurtinder Singh Mantu, manager, Gurudwara Kandh Sahib told that tying of chaplet on the palanquin of Guru Granth Sahib continue whole year, but increases in these days as it is sacred gurudwara because Guru Nanak Dev got married here.
Shopkeeper Rahul Mahajan said that devotees often come to his shop to purchase chaplets but in these days the demand picked up.
