Hundreds of pilgrims today took a holy dip in waters of historic 'Phalgu Teertha', situated at village Pharal in the district on the occasion of Somavati Amavas.

They also performed 'pind dan' to their ancestors.

During 'Somavati Amavas', the 'teertha', enjoys the same status and importance as that of 'Gaya ji teertha' of Bihar.

A 14-day 'Phalgu mela' being held at the religious teertha kicked off yesterday, officials said.

The 'teertha' is named after Phalgu rishi, who used to pray here in the forest called 'Phalki van'.

It is situated in the remote Pharal village on the Dhand-Pundri road, about 32 kms from historic town of Kurukshetra.

In order to get the benefit effects of Gaya teertha, Phalgu Rishi started praying incessantly. As a result he got a boon that by offering 'pinds' (food offered to the souls after death of an individual) to the departed souls on Somavati Amavas one would get the same benefit as by performing the ritual at the Gaya Teertha.

Meanwhile, lakhs of pilgrims visited holy 'sarovars' (sacred tanks) at Kurukshetra, to have a holy bath on the occasion.
