Thousands of people from various parts of the north coastal Andhra Pradesh districts today congregated at Bheemunipatnam in the district for a holy dip in the sea on the occasion of 'Mahodayam', considered to an auspicious day.

Mahodayam comes once in 25 years. The last occasion was February 2, 1989.

Inspector T Appala Naidu of Bheemunipatnam police station said no untoward incident was reported anywhere during the day as police had made elaborate security arrangements.

The district administration had deployed 200 divers along the coast.

Various organisations provided drinking water, butter-milk, biscuits, etc., to the devotees.

Nearly 3.5 to 4 lakh people had a dip in the sea before 6 pm, the police officer estimated.
