Prior to the car festival, the holy flag was hoisted. After special prayers on the theme "Mary -refuge of Sinners" conducted by Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio and Bishop of Thanjavur Devdoss Ambrose, seven illuminated cars in various sizes were taken in a procession.
Clad in a pure silk saree resembling Indian culture, the Lady of Good Health was taken in the biggest of the cars. Devotees sang divine songs during the procession.
The car festival marks commencement of the birthday celebrations of the Lady of Good Health which is celebrated on September 8.
The main event of the 11-day annual festival will be held tomorrow. Special prayers will be conducted in several languages from 6 a.M and the holy flag will be lowered in the evening, marking the end of the annual festival.
Many pilgrims have arrived in the town covering hundreds of kilometers on foot.
The entire town is illuminated with lamps. The museum of offerings is overflowing with various things placed by the pilgrims.
The district administration has made elaborate arrangements for smooth conduct of the festival.
