A 'dharna' was staged by a number of groups here in demand of a separate autonomous hill state, combining the districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.

The dharna was organised by Hills State Demand Council (HSDC), Karbi Student's Association (KSA), Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA), Student Youth Council (SYC) and Women Council (WC).

The protestors said that the BJP government had promised for a separate state before coming to power.

Through a memorandum to the Prime Minister and submitted to Karbi Anglong DC, the groups appealed to the government to start the process of creating an autonomous state for the hill people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.

Former MP Jayanta Rongpi said until their demands are fulfilled, they will continue the agitation "as this is our constitutional right".
