West Bengal Director of Health Services (DHS) Biswa Ranjan Satpathi today ordered a fresh probe on the loss of vision of eight patients who had undergone a cataract removal operation at the MJN Hospital in Cooch Behar.

Satpathi told reporters that Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Dr Subhasis Saha had submitted a report on the incident today but he was not satisfied with it as no responsibility was fixed in the report.

"It is not possible to take any step with such a report. The CMOH has been asked to conduct a fresh inquiry and submit the report by Monday," said Satpathi.

A cataract operation was held at MJN Hospital on Thursday last and before releasing the patients on Friday it was observed that they had lost their vision.

Soon after the incident, the authorities referred them to Siliguri and Jalpaiguri for better treatment.

The authorities had also constituted a four-member committee to probe the matter and Satpathi had held a meeting with District Magistrate P Ulganathan, CMOH Dr Subhasis Saha, MJN Hospital Super Dr Jaideb Barman and health officials from different blocks of the district yesterday.
