After Jagannath Prasad and Kabisurya Nagar, diarrhoea has spread to fresh areas in Odisha's Ganjam district with at least 28 people affected by the water borne disease in last three days.

Diarrhoea broke out at Jakara village under Polasara block after residents took food in a village feast on Sunday night, officials said.

The affected persons were admitted to community health centre at Polasara and almost all of them have been cured, said Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO, public health) Jagadeesh Patnaik.

The situation in Jakara village is under control with immediate intervention of the medical staff, officials said. Despite that, the ADMO said they have set up a medical relief centre at the village while a medical team has been deployed there to provide immediate treatment to the patients.

All the water sources in the village have been disinfected while halogen and ORS packets were distributed among the families of the affected people to arrest further spread of the disease, Patnaik said.

The disease is under control in Jagannath Prasad block and Kabisurya Nagar town. Only two persons are undergoing treatment at Kabisurya Nagar and their condition is stated to be good, he said.

Over 50 people were affected in the diarrhoea in the town since April 25. Health officials suspected consumption of contaminated water for the outbreak.

Meanwhile, drinking water supply is made through tankers in at least three out of 18 wards of the Notified Area Council (NAC) area, official sources said.

In Jagannath Prasad, the disease is under control, he said. No fresh case has been reported from the area. At least three persons died and over 150 people in 36 villages were affected in the disease. Doctors had detected two cases of cholera in the area, the sources said.
