"Mary Poppins" star Dick Van Dyke says the upcoming sequel of the cult musical will be difficult.

Van Dyke, who played Bert in the Disney classic, is tipped for a return in the follow-up along with Julie Andrews, reported Daily Mirror.

"I'd have to see the script. Without Walt Disney, and the Sherman brothers to write the score, and Julie, it will be difficult, I think," Van Dyke said.

"Every day we came to work and we knew there was something magical going on. There was such a spirit. Walt was always there as a morale builder. We both said we were children looking for our inner adult - Walt was such a big kid.

"Sequels are traditionally not as good as the first. But I wish them well."

Emily Blunt will play Mary Poppins in the sequel with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda also to star.

Meryl Streep could reunite with her "Devil Wears Prada" co-star in the sequel too.

"Mary Poppins Returns" is set in Depression-era London and sees Mary return to the grown-up Banks children to help them once more, this time following a family tragedy.

The film is set for release on December 25, 2018.
