It has been three decades that Bruce Willis' John McClane screamed 'Die Hard' in John McTiernan's seminal 1988 action blockbuster and the makers gave a fitting tribute to the film when they marked the occasion with an outdoor screening at the famed 'Nakatomi Tower'.

It was the foot of Fox Plaza in Century City, that stood in for the fictional tower, which saw hundreds gathered on the roof of an adjacent parking garage at dusk as the structure served as a glorious backdrop to experience "Die Hard" like never before, Variety reported.

"Die Hard", a film franchise that originated with Roderick Thorp's novel "Nothing Lasts Forever", revolves around McClane, a New York City and Los Angeles police detective who continually finds himself in the middle of difficult situations and is the only beacon of hope in crisis.

It was at the fictional Nakatomi Plaza that East German terrorists broke in and took the celebrants hostage.

With five films in the series, the first one also starred Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, Reginald VelJohnson and Bonnie Bedelia.

Bedelia, who was present for the screening, said the building was "kind of the star of the movie".

She and VelJohnson were on hand to introduce the film for the fans in attendance, many of whom wore T-shirts emblazoned with a few of the movie's unforgettable lines.

"I love to meet intense fans. They always come up to you and say their favourite thing in the movie, and I'll have to think a minute to remember what they're talking about! But I watch it and I see things I didn't even know were there before. It's the kind of movie that always surprises you when you watch it," VelJohnson said.

Made for USD 28 million, "Die Hard" grossed over USD 140 million theatrically worldwide, turning Willis into an action star.
