Different modes of transport should complement each other, instead of competing among themselves, for providing effective mobility solutions, speakers at a conference said here.
The three-day conference on 'Urban Mobility India' was inaugurated by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday and concluded today.
"For effective mobility solutions, complementarity among different modes of transport must be promoted in place of the existing competition," an official release stated as an outcome of the conference.
The event was attended by several Indian and foreign delegates on urban planning and mobility.
The conference threw up a near unanimous view on reorientation of urban transport planning, financing and execution to promote "intelligent, inclusive and sustainable mobility", the release said.
Inadequacies in the present regulatory and policy frameworks were discussed and improvements and introduction of new frameworks identified, it said as another outcome.
Capacity building of all stakeholders to meet mobility challenges is the need of the hour, the release said.
The meet felt metro rail is no more a transportation project in isolation, but an urban transformation initiative now, in the context of comprehensive urban mobility solutions.
Innovative financing and non-fare revenue options should be fully explored to finance metro systems, it was said in the conference.
The meet also favoured promotion of electric vehicles.
"Urban transport planning needs to acknowledge the right of access to public spaces for the poor and the marginalised. Restoration of the first right of pedestrians to road use required," the release said.
Noting that transport sector accounts for over 25 per cent of green-house gas emissions, the conference underscored the need to promote eco-friendly mobility solutions.
