Attacking Vishwa Hindu Parishad over its proposed yatra in Uttar Pradesh, Congress leader Digvijay Singh today said it was "nothing but a political move".

The Congress general secretary also took a dig at the saffron outfit saying that it was unaware of Hindu traditions as such a yatra is not taken out at this time of the year.

"This is nothing, but a political move. This is a clear violation of the Supreme Court order of maintaining a status quo on the Ram Mandir issue," Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a book launch here.

The VHP has said that it will use the yatra as a platform to raise the issue of construction of Ram Mandir at the Ramjanmabhoomi site at Ayodhya.

"As per the Hindu tradition, one does not take out yatras in Chaturmas. The VHP is unaware of traditions of the Hindu religion. The Chaurasi Parikrama yatra is usually undertaken during Ram Navmi," Singh added.

The Uttar Pradesh government has rejected VHP's request to undertake the yatra. The BJP has criticised the Uttar Pradesh government and the Samajwadi party for denying permission to the VHP for undertaking the yatra.

On the gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, Singh said, "We strongly condemn this act. The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai police will take strongest action against the culprits."

Taking a potshot at the BJP, he said,"I was surprised that the BJP spokesperson was supporting Asaramji Bapu."

He was referring to self-styled godman Asaram who is facing allegation of sexually abusing a minor.
