The national capital can now boast of its own tagline - Dildaar Dilli (Magnanimous Delhi).

Coined by Delhiite Amit Anand, the tagline was selected after a committee went through over 12,000 entries in a competition organised by Delhi government and Delhi Tourism.

The announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at a function here today.

Dikshit said the city of Delhi, loved by many since ages, has always accepted everyone as its own and that is its biggest identity.

"From the days of Mughals to the British and now, Delhi has delighted everyone.

"Aur ye sabko apna leti hai, sabko sama leti hai, yeh Dilli ki badappan bhi hai aur sabse badi pehchan bhi (it accepts everyone as a family...This is its greatness and biggest identity)," she said.

Dikshit said the committee sat for months to select the winner from 'Dilkash', 'Dilwaali', Damdaar' and 'Shandaar' Dilli among others.

"We chose 'Dildaar Dilli' as our new identity though we liked others too but 'Dildaar' was something as a common element among most entries," she said.

While winner Amit Anand walked away with Rs 50,000 as the first prize, consolation prizes were also handed over to other selected candidates present at the launch.

"I think this competition itself has shown the love people have for the city of Delhi and that itself makes it a historic one. And with this Delhi has got words for its feeling," she said.

"The tagline is to sum up the essence of Delhi, Delhi's history, culture, modernity and diversity. Delhi is the gateway to India and it receives record number of tourists every year. The new identity will surely attract one and all and promote Delhi in the global map," she said.
