The foreign contribution to NGOs has seen a dip from Rs 17,798 crore in 2015-16 to Rs 15,329 crore in 2016-17, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha today.
The number of NGOs registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) has also come down from 24,197 in 2015-16 to 23,176 in 2016-17, he said in a written reply.
As on August 1, 2018, the total number of FCRA registered NGOs stood at 2,521, he said, adding that these NGO's had received Rs 588 crore in the first four months of this fiscal year.
The Union minister of state for home affairs said the aforementioned data is based on the annual returns filed by the associations or NGOs as on August 1, 2018. The last date for filing the annual returns for 2017-18 is December 31, 2018.
Most of the NGOs are likely to file their annual returns a few weeks before the deadline, he said.
The central government has cancelled licences of about 20,000 of the over 33,000 NGOs in the last four years in the country for breach of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
