A petition was filed in Madras High Court today on behalf of Leader of the opposition and DMDK founder Vijayakant, seeking a direction to police to grant permission to celebrate the birth date of their leader and for welfare programmes at various districts from October 7 to 21.

DMDK Deputy general secretary P.Pandi submitted that they have requested through registered post that adequate police protection be given for the meetings in which their leader would be participating in.

The petitioner further submitted that the status of opposition leader is equivalent to a cabinet minister as per state Protocol.

He alleged that police were deliberately ignoring giving adequate protection for the meetings of their leader. Their representation to the DGP in this regard on Septmber 23 had failed to yield any response and hence they had moved court, he said.
