A policeman, who was dismissed for throwing a shoe at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in 2010, has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a truck driver in south Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said.

Abdul Ahad Jan, who was a head constable in the police force before being dismissed on disciplinary grounds, was arrested yesterday after he allegedly extorted an amount of Rs 38,000 from a truck driver Kulvinder Singh, a resident of Punjab, in Pampore area of Pulwama, a police spokesman said.

A case has been registered at Pampore police station in this regard.

Jan had hurled a shoe at Omar Abdullah during an Independence Day function in 2010 soon after the Chief Minister had unfurled the national flag.

Jan's services in the police department were terminated in February 2011 following departmental disciplinary proceedings in a case pending against him before the show throwing incident.
