Displaced Kashmiri youths clash with police during protest

As youths belonging to displaced community staged demonstrations, police tried to evict those sitting on a fast at Jagti township today, officials said.

The protesters shouted anti-government slogans and pelted stones on police and vehicles of some doctors resulting in injuries to a cop, they said.

The protesters were demanding enhancement o relief for displaced people, smooth power and water supply to Jagti township, which houses around 4,000 families.

Relief Commissioner R K Pandita, who arrived at Jagti, also faced hostile crowds.

The protests continued till late tonight as Relief Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner were camping in the area to defuse the situation.

 

Protests were led by President of Jagti Tenaments committee Shadi Lal Pandita, who was booked by the Crime Branch for major relief fraud and is under investigation.

Panun Kashmir condemned the police action and decided to observe September 14 as Black Day.

Expressing concern over the condition of Kashmiri Pandits of Jagti township, Ajay Chrungoo, Chairman of Panun Kashmir said, "The curtailment of power and water supply to Kashmiri Pandit inmates of Jagti Township and the non enhancement of relief brings to the fore the apathetic attitude of the administration towards the religiously cleansed Kashmiri pandits."
