Dist administration orders old pension to 85-year-old woman

The district administration has ordered resumption of old age pension to a 85-year-old woman after video clippings surfaced in whatsApp showing her begging on the streets at Nilakottai near here.

The woman Palaniammal, a widow, was living alone in a thatched hut after marrying her daughter off to a person at Chennai.

She was not able to go for work or even cook due to old age and her only livelihood was old age pension, which she ws not getting for the last 13 months without assigning any reason.

Though she made several representations, there was no response from the officials.
 

Some youths in the area who took pity on her and took photograph of the woman begging and uploaded it in WhatsApp and sent it to government officials.

Palaniammal told reporters that she was having a honourable life in Chennai before 30 years before her husband left her and her daughter due to finance problem.

Then she was living with her daughter, whom she married off with great difficulty. She had come to the native place for spending her rest of the days.

She got the old age pension and was living with that. But officials stopped it. "Why would I beg if have money?or get the pension?, she asked.

Tahsildhar Saravanan said that the district Collector has ordered to resume her pension.
