Following the defeat of Congress candidates in civic polls, its Rupnagar district committee chief and three general secretaries today resigned from their posts.

Congress Committee President Harbhag Singh Saini who along with General Secretaries Zorawar Singh Bittu, Ajit Pal Singh and Ali Daman Singh tendered their resignations and accused a few senior Congress leaders of working against party candidates which led to their defeat.

Addressing media here, Saini alleged that senior congress leaders like former Chief Parliamentary Secretary K P Rana and some other leaders allegedly worked against official candidates in civic polls and as a result of which, they lost elections.

No Congress candidates could register a win in polling to 21 wards of six Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats in Rupnagar.

He claimed that many defeated Congress candidates had lodged complaints against senior party leaders.

Saini said he and his team were compelled to resign from their respective posts as party High command did not take any action against these leaders despite recommending disciplinary action in the past.
