Lawyers of all the six district courts here have decided to go on an indefinite strike from December 9 against the delay in tabling amended bill regarding enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts.
The co-ordination committee of bar associations of all the district courts in Delhi said that despite assurances, the proposed bill recommending enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs 2 crore for the courts, has found no mention in the agenda of present Winter Session of Parliament.
"The Parliamentary standing committee on personnel, public grievances, law and justice presented its report dated November 28, 2014 to Parliament whereby it has accorded the recommendation for enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs 2 crore for the district courts of Delhi," the committee said in a statement.
Despite assurance and recommendation for enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction for district courts at Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Rohini, Karkardooma, Saket and Dwarka, nothing has been done yet and the bill has not been tabled in Parliament, Advocate R K Wadhwa, chairman of the committee, said.
The committee also said that the full bench of the Delhi High Court had recommended to the Centre for enhancing pecuniary jurisdiction from existing Rs 20 lakh to Rs 2 crore.
"The same was done with the aim and objective to reduce pendency and work load in the Delhi High Court...," it said, adding, "Yet nothing has been done in this regard for the past nearly two years."
"The co-ordination committee of all district court bar associations of Delhi has in its emergent meeting decided to abstain from work with effect from December 9, 2014 till the bill is tabled in the Parliament," the statement said.
Asking why the bill has not been tabled in Parliament despite the report and recommendation of the standing committee, Wadhwa said, "Our strike will go on till the bill is tabled in Parliament.
