Divorce among ethnic Indians in Malaysia is rapidly rising and if the trend continues, it is feared the community could be plagued with social problems.

The number of divorces within the minority Indian community has risen to about 5,000 a year currently.

Currently 5,000 divorce cases were being reported annually in the community compared to just 200 till a few years ago, S V Lingam, head of a Tamil social group said.

A local Tamil daily quoted him as saying the lack of understanding and absence of a give-and-take attitude among married couples were the main causes for the increasing number of divorces, the Malaysia Star reported.

He said that religious organisations like Malaysia Hindu Sangam must consider conducting compulsory marriage courses for couples to provide guidance for a successful marriage.
