A six-year-old boy died after being accidentally hit by a bullet during celebratory firing by his grandfather on the occasion of Diwali in southwest Delhi's Bindapur area, police said today.

The 60-year-old grandfather, identified as Ram Kumar, rushed the child, Shivam, to a hospital, where he died. The hospital authorities called up the police control room, said police.

"A case has been registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Kumar was arrested immediately," said DCP (Southwest) R A Sanjeev, adding that Kuamr was later released on bail.

According to the police, the incident was reported around 10.45 PM when Kumar was firing in the air with his licenced revolver, which excited his six-year-old grandson.

Shivam was constantly pulling his grandfather's arm to have a closer look at the gun, following which one of the bullets, meant to be fired on air, hit him near his chest.

Shivam's body was handed over to his relatives after post-mortem today, police added.
