Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been directed by a consumer forum here to pay Rs 10,000 to one of its customers for issuing an incorrect water bill to him.

The East District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum said the bill issued by DJB for commercial usage was "illegal" as the civic agency itself had admitted that the complainant's connection was for domestic purposes.

"In view of the overwhelming evidence available on record and admission of the opposite party (DJB) in their reply that the connection was for domestic purposes..., the bill issued on non-domestic basis was wholly illegal.

"We allow this complaint and direct opposite party to issue the correct bill as per the domestic tariff plan...," a bench presided by N A Zaidi said and directed DJB to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to U K Aggarwal.

Aggarwal, in his complaint, had alleged the water bill of Rs 64,000, issued for the period from December, 2002 to February 2003, was incorrect as it was raised for commercial usage while his connection was for domestic purposes.

During the pendency of the proceedings, DJB told the forum that it has corrected the bill and the amount has been reduced to Rs 2,433.
