Supporting the demand of resident doctors, the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) today asked the city government to ensure availability of adequate life-saving drugs in hospitals, security at workplace and timely payment of salaries.
The resident doctors had last night called off their strike after Delhi government invoked Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against them to normalise the functioning of the hospitals run by it.
DMA also said that a section of doctors were continuing the strike.
"In the interest of the patients of government hospitals, we demand that proper facilities for patients in terms of numbers of beds, availability of life-saving drugs, increase in number of OT rooms, increase in number of ambulances for the patients alongwith diagnostic equipments like CT, MRI.
"Not being able to avail the services due to paucity of these facilities, citizens are assaulting doctors...There is no security and safety of the junior doctors. During such situations, even female doctors are assaulted," said Dr Ajay Lekhi, President of DMA.
On the other side, junior residents doctors are not getting their salary in time.
"All these demands were sent to the Health Ministry, one month before but nothing has been done by the authorities which forced us to take this step which we never wanted to take," said Lekhi.
Yesterday, the striking doctors had met Delhi Health minister Satyendra Jain and their demands were agreed upon.
