DMDK today held a protest here urging the Tamil Nadu government to rollback the 15 per cent increase in electricity tariff.

Leading the agitation, DMDK chief Vijaykanth said the common man should not be burdened with the rise in the power tariff and sought an immediate rollback of the hike.

Effective December 12, Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) notified 15 per cent increase in tariff for all categories of electricity consumers.

The tariff hike was announced despite protests from various quarters including political parties and consumers.

The actor-turned politician, who is also the leader of the opposition in the assembly, said both the ruling AIADMK and the DMK had all along been exploiting the people.

"I will fight for you, (people), you support me," he said.

This is the first major protest to be held by the DMDK in the state, after a hiatus of several months.

The party, an ally of BJP, has come in for criticism from commentators for not 'properly' using its status as the main opposition for taking on the government on several critical issues.
